When you need a truly relaxing vacation, bed and breakfasts can provide exactly what you’re looking for. And for many people, their definition of relaxing includes plenty of time to read books! These bed and breakfasts with literary themes are at the top of our list of places to stay.

Bellows Falls, VT.

The innkeepers collect and sell books, specializing in gardening books, cookbooks, biographies and technology books. Each guest room has books for sale according to theme. A gargoyle on the inn’s roof is reading Grimm’s Fairy Tales.

2. Alexander House Booklovers’ B&B

Princess Anne, Maryland

Each room at this Queen Anne Victorian offers a realistic interpretation of a famous author’s room in his or her time: Langston Hughes, Robert Louis Stevenson, Mark Twain and Jane Austen. There are no phones, televisions or computers, so guest will have plenty of quite time to enjoy a good book. There is a Booklovers’ Gift Shop on site.

3. Cushing Manor Inn

South Bend, Indiana

This literary inn is the only 4 Diamond Bed and Breakfast in Illinois and Indiana! Formerly known as The Book Inn, it features a shop of used books and a tea room perfect for reading. Originally built in 1872, the building is listed as an outstanding example of Second Empire architecture by the Indiana Historic Site Preservation Committee.

4. Prairie House Manor

De Smet, South Dakota

Located in the hometown of Little House on the Prairie author Laura Ingalls Wilder, this building was originally the home of Banker Ruth from the Little House book The Long Winter. The local area has many Ingalls Wilder-themed attractions, including the Ingalls Homestead and the Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society.

Barnegat Light, New Jersey

“A place where both books and people are enjoyed.” The B&B caters to booklovers with a full library, a shady back yard and hammocks. It’s located on the northern tip of New Jersey’s Long Beach Island, and one of the innkeepers is a writer!
