Saint Patricks Day

February 16th, 2010 by Mariah

Tabhair pog dom, taim Eireannach!

Kiss Me, I’m Irish!

Believe it or not there is more to do on St. Paddy’s Day then drink green beer. Many of the US cities that put on a St. Paddy’s Day parade draw spectators that reach into the hundred of thousands. Whether with friends or family, a St. Patrick’s Day Parade is sure to be a great time for all ages. Many cities have events before and after the parade such as dinner and cocktail banquets, dyeing the town river green, painting the town red, concerts, and film festivals.

Chicago

The Downtown Chicago Parade begins at 12:00 noon, Saturday March 13th. Why is the parade not held on Saint Patrick’s Day? A little background is in order here.
The parade is the Saturday before the actual calendar date of Saint Patrick’s Day. This allows families to participate in the festivities without having to remove their children from school. The South Side Irish Parade Family Fest will be the marquis event in a 10 day celebration of St. Patrick’s Day in the Beverly/Morgan Park community – a celebration which will begin with the return of the Chicago Irish Film Festival.

New York City

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade is one of New York City’s greatest traditions. On this day, everyone is Irish in the Big Apple! The Parade marched for the first time on March 17, 1762 – fourteen Years before the Declaration of Independence was adopted and today it is the largest Parade in the World. To this day, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade remains true to its roots as a true marchers Parade by not allowing floats, automobiles and other commercial aspects in the Parade. Every year the Parade Committee hosts the 150,000- 250,000 marchers, along with many great bands; bagpipes, high school bands and the ever-present politicians in front of the approx 2 million spectators lining Fifth Avenue.
