B&B Over the Ocean to Open in Spring 2011

October 14th, 2010 by Mariah

B&B Over the Ocean to Open in Spring 2011

In August, Richard Neal paid $85,000 for a decommissioned U.S. Coast Guard tower 25 miles off the coast of North Carolina. Neal plans to turn Frying Pan Shoals Light Station into a bed and breakfast, catering to fishermen, divers and others seeking a one-of-a-kind getaway — and he is now accepting reservations, although the inn will not open until spring 2011.

The tower is being refurbished with seven private rooms, each with an ocean view. Reservations are only being accepted for the entire tower, Thursday through Sunday. According to the Light Station’s web site, “The interest from groups and individuals has been overwhelming to say the least.”

The tower sits 60 feet above the ocean; it is anchored to the ocean floor by four steel legs. Among the renovations planned by Neal is the installation of solar and wind power. He recently told the Wilmington (North Carolina) Star News that although he plans to accept guests next spring, renovations — estimated to cost more than $1.3 million, an amount Neal said could be cut by 75 percent with the help of volunteers — will not be complete until a year later.

This year we will be serving a traditional Thanksgiving meal, in 6 courses. Texas State Fair

October 7th, 2010 by Mariah

The State Fair of Texas is an annual State Fair held in Dallas, TX. The fair season usually begins the last Friday in September and ends 24 days later. The fair is held at the historic Fair Park where it has been held since 1886. The 2010 fair will be held from September 24 to October 17.

Big Tex, a 52 ft tall cowboy, has been the symbol of the fair since his introduction in 1952; in 1953, Big Tex’s jaw was hinged, so that he appears to “speak” the announcements that promote fair events. The State Fair of Texas is the largest state fair in the US by annual attendance. Its 212-foot Texas Star Ferris Wheel has been the largest in North America since it debuted in October 1985. As of 2003, the fair’s marketing director estimated that the fair was bringing about 350 million dollars into the Dallas economy.

President Barack Obama signed the Small Business Jobs Act

October 4th, 2010 by Mariah

WASHINGTON, Sept. 27 (UPI) — U.S. President Barack Obama signed the Small Business Jobs Act in a ceremony in the East Room Monday afternoon.

The $42 billion measure passed by Congress takes effect immediately and is designed to aid small businesses and create jobs.

A summary of the bill from the Senate said it is expected to create 500,000 jobs, CNN reported.

Among other things it would authorize the creation of a $30 billion fund for small community banks to lend to businesses.

Earlier, Obama appeared on the NBC “Today” show to kick off a three-day summit on education hosted by the network, calling for a longer school year and the hiring of more math and science teachers.

The event, “Education Nation,” focuses on the state of education in America.

The White House said the president was to travel to Albuquerque Monday night.

B&Bs for Vets on November 10

October 4th, 2010 by Mariah

In honor of Veterans Day, more than 300 bed and breakfasts in 40 states and provinces are providing free rooms the night of Wednesday, November 10, to servicemen and women currently serving or who have previously served their country. (Veterans Day is November 11.) The program, known as B&Bs for Vets, was started in 2008 by the West Virginia B&B Association. This year’s list of participating inns also indicates if the inn is full.

“We just wanted to say thank you to the courageous men and women from our armed forces,” Kathleen Panek, owner of the Gillum House in Shinnston, West Virginia, said in a press release. “These are some trying times for anyone serving or who has served and a good night’s rest is our way to say, thank you.”

Valid military or VA identificaation is required for each reservation. Each participating inn is making at least one room available on the night of Wednesday, November 10, to active and retired military personnel. Availability is limited, and reservations must be booked directly through the B&B.

Hotel ousts couple after accusing them of writing negative TripAdvisor review

September 30th, 2010 by Mariah

A British couple says they were kicked out of their hotel after the hotel manager accused them of writing a negative review on TripAdvisor and called the police.

Adrian Healey, 33, tells the Blackpool Gazette that earlier this month, he’d booked a room a hotel in the seaside resort of Blackpool, England, to take his first vacation with his girlfriend Sherrie Andrews, 33, since being diagnosed with cancer 18 months ago.

But the Golden Beach Hotel’s manager asked them to leave two days into their paid, three-night stay, they told the Gazette, adding that the manager stormed into their room, accused them of writing an online review and called the police.

“We had been there a day when they said we couldn’t get back in our rooms because they were re-carpeting, and we didn’t complain. All we asked was if we could have an extra towel,” Healey tells the paper.

“Then, on our second evening, he banged on the door and told us to get out, accusing us of writing a review on Trip Advisor, and said he would call the police,” Healey says.

“I was shocked when the police arrived, and we just agreed to leave,” Healey tells the Gazette. “We asked for a refund but the hotel refused. I think it is shocking and people need to know about this.”

Hotel management declined to comment when contacted by paper.

Blackpool police confirmed that they had been called to the Golden Beach Hotel to remove a man who had not committed a crime.

“No offence had been committed by the couple, but the manager had requested them to leave the property,” the paper quotes a police official as saying. “We advised the couple how to go about getting a refund. This is a civil matter.”
